Chainsaws for sale in Ireland - buyer's guide

Petrol powered chainsaws are the ideal gardener's tool for pruning bushes, trimming branches, felling trees, or for cutting logs and railway sleepers for a wood burning stove. At Irish mowers we provide a chain saw for every job, from light domestic users to regular professional saws for use in forestry. To start with for safety, it’s recommended that full personal protective equipment should be used at all times as instructed by the chainsaw owner's manual. Before using your chainsaw always read and follow the safety instructions provided and keep in mind the safety of others as well as your own.

Petrol powered chain saws are powerful and versatile machines able to go anywhere outdoors and are ideal for users who need a little more power. All chainsaws from Irish Mowers have two stroke engines that require two stroke oil mix. It is vital you use good quality two stroke that is mixed at the correct ratio.

Our chainsaws for sale in Ireland come with a wide range of bar and chain lengths, from the small Stihl MS170 with manageable 12" cutting bar to the huge Husqvarna 3120XP with 42" cutting bar. The longer the length of the chain bar, the larger the diameter of wood that can be safely cut, also the harder it is to handle. As a general rule, logs to be sawn should be shorter than the exposed cutting chain bar length, unless the operator is specially trained. Users intending to cut thinner wood such as small logs for fire wood generally stick to a chainsaw with a smaller guide bar, such as the Husqvarna 120 or the Stihl MS181 with 14" guide bar and chain.

Chain lubricating oil is an essential requirement. It acts as a coolant and lubricant for the bar and chain. Our Stihl, Tanaka and Husqvarna chainsaws all come with an automatic chain lubrication pump. This is usually timed to run out of oil when the fuel runs out. It is always a good idea to top up your oil reserve when topping up your fuel. For the effective and safe running of your chainsaw, it is vital to use oil with the correct viscosity. A chainsaw run without lubricating the chain will be prone to stretching the chain or even breaking the chain, which can result in nasty injuries. As well as chain damage you will ruin your guide bar if you run the chain saw without the correct chain oil.

It is normal for a chain to stretch after a minute of so of the first use. It is important to adjust the chain tensioner to that the correct tension is applied to the chain (shown in the user manual). A chain will also go blunt. This is also normal and can put the saw under unnecessary stress if it is not kept sharp. Sharpening files are cheap and very effective at keeping your chainsaw sharp. Also avoid letting the chain come into contact with nails, soil or any other material that may cause it to go blunt. There is no rule as to how long a chain should last before it is blunt. A chain may last one minute, one hour, one day or one month before it is blunt, it all depends on various factors including the type of wood being cut, quality of oil used, any foreign objects hit and the general way in which the chainsaw is being used.
